Association FOFO: Promotion of Nigerien Culture
vendredi 8 juillet 2011
The promotion of culture is important for development, education, and the creation of an open-minded society. However, the status of artists in Niger is not enviable: there is little initial training, little institutional support, and very little social consideration. And yet, Niger has of one of the largest networks of cultural institutions in Africa, including cultural centers, youth associations, and public libraries.
The general objective of Association FOFO is to encourage, promote, and share Nigerien culture both inside and outside of Niger by:
- releasing information about Nigerien culture through the Internet and print
- organizing cultural events
- initiating and integrating cultural networks, both locally and internationally
- assisting artists with administrative and promotional matters
- creating a digital database of Nigerien art (audio recordings, videos, photos, etc.)
- organizing artistic training workshops and seminars
- producing audio-visual work (music albums, video clips, etc.)
- exposing Nigerien children to Nigerien art
Inundated by western culture through the Nigerien media, young people are moving further and further away from their own rich and varied culture. As the natural and historic link between the Maghreb and Black Africa, Niger is a land of exchange and welcome. Its eight principle ethnic groups have known how to preserve their diversity through respect and mutual acceptance. Cousinage à plaisanterie, or the creation of a relationship through humorous jokes, has always filled its role as a social regulator.
